Making ATS and ETS2 look incredible

ReShade, Project Next Gen and Snowy Moon running together, the load order that stops the crashes, and the settings other channels won't share. Everything below is what's actually installed on my machine.

The guides

Four full walkthroughs. If you're starting from nothing, take the bottom one first — it covers the install from scratch. The others build on it with newer ReShades and game versions.

There's also an earlier, standalone ATS ReShade and weather mods guide covering a different install and video — worth a look if none of the four below match your exact setup.

ATS — Project Next Gen 2.0 and the Simuverse ReShade

The 2.0 rain overhaul with road puddles finally fixed, the Jon Ruda W900 Highway Killer, and my own Snowy Moon lighting settings instead of the defaults.

ETS2 — Project Ultimate ReShade and weather

With Angus May. Directional rain that behaves like real rain, a free sample ReShade, and the clean reinstall that fixes the "couldn't install effects" error.

ATS — Simuverse ReShade and the chrome fix

Why Snowy Moon dulls your chrome and the reflection and tone map settings that fix it, plus the infinite seat adjustment for a real truck view.

ATS — the full install, start to finish

Start here. Where mods come from, installing ReShade and Snowy Moon together, load order, and the config changes that stop the crashing.

The two things people get wrong

ReShade has to be version 6.50

Newer builds don't work with ATS or ETS2. The installer will warn you that your build is outdated — ignore it. If you've had ReShade installed before, uninstall it first and then delete every leftover in the game's bin\\Win_x64 folder: the log files and the shaders folder. Those leftovers are the single most common cause of the error saying the effects couldn't be installed.

ReShade and Snowy Moon both want the same file

Both ship a dxgi.dll, and two of them can't live in the same folder. After installing ReShade, rename its dxgi.dll to d3d11.dll — a super extension that loads the same way. Then drop Snowy Moon's dxgi.dll and dinput8.dll in alongside it and both run happily together.

Check it worked in game: Home brings up ReShade, End brings up Snowy Moon. If both open with no red errors, you're set.

Snowy Moon doesn't work in VR

The lighting improvements are flat screen only. The Snowy Moon temporal anti-aliasing application is the one that works in a headset, and it's free. Worth knowing before you subscribe.

Load order

The question I get asked most. There's more than one workable answer, but this ordering has never caused me a problem:

  1. Sound mods at the very top
  2. Weather and graphics mods next — whichever sits higher takes precedence
  3. Project Next Gen, with its own weather component removed if you're substituting another
  4. Everything else: trucks, trailers, traffic, wheels
  5. Skins at the very bottom

Paid mods often ship their own required order — Pizzter and Jon Ruda both do — so follow theirs where it conflicts with the general rule. If things break, Steam's verify integrity of installed files and the find best load order option under the Workshop tab will usually sort it.

Config settings worth changing

In Documents\\American Truck Simulator\\config.cfg (or the ETS2 equivalent):

SettingWhat to do
Buffer page sizeUsually around 40. Raise it — 60 to start, 80 on a high-end system.
g_trafficDefault 1.1 gives you empty roads. 1.3 to 1.4 is realistic; beyond that gets silly.
Reflection scale1 to 5. I run 3 — this is what brings the chrome back after Snowy Moon dulls it.
Memory pool (launch options)Set in Steam under properties. Assumes 32GB of RAM — halve it if you have 16GB.

Worth doing in the Nvidia control panel too: power management to maximum performance, low latency mode to ultra, and shader cache size to 100GB or unlimited if your drive can take it.

Crashing after a game update?

Before you go hunting through log files, delete the config file and let the game build a fresh one. It gets corrupted moving between versions more often than you'd think, and it's cost me an afternoon before.

The view over the wheel

The other thing people ask about constantly. That vantage point looking over the top of the steering wheel, as you'd have in a real cab, comes from the immersive camera view and infinite zoom mod on the Steam Workshop. It lets the seat travel past the limits the game normally allows.

Press F4, choose adjust seats, then use the FOV slider first and the seat position to refine it. Aim for the top of the wheel just in view with both mirrors clearly visible. Paired with head tracking, that's where the flat screen stops feeling like a flat screen.
